While the rugby world may have spent most of their time in Auckland and other cities over the RWC, they still didn’t go to where the real heartbeat of Kiwi rugby is – Canterbury!!! What do you mean? I hear you say. Well, this is what Canterbury provided for the triumphant AB’s:
Thirteen of the squad play their rugby for Canterbury or the Crusaders. Henry is Christchurch born and played 1st XV rugby at Christchurch Boys’ High School. Smith and Hansen both played for Canterbury in the 80’s and have coached the Crusaders. Hansen is an old boy of CBHS as well. Manager Darren Shand is also from Canterbury as is Deb Robinson the team doctor. Mike Cron, AB scrum specialist, lives in Canterbury as does Gilbert Enoka the team’s mental skills coach. Finally, baggage man Errol Collins (aka Poss) had a 14 year service record with Canterbury before his AB post.
